Maggie Smith who was known for her scene-stealing performance in Downtown Abbey and Harry Potter, dies at 89. She also won Oscar in 1969, for her performance in The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie. She also played notable roles in Downton Abbey, as Dowager Countess of Grantham, and Professor Minerva in Harry Potter.
She also received 7 Bafta awards and four other nominations. Prime Minister Keir Starmer also gave tributes to Dame Maggie stating that she was beloved by many for her immense talent, and has become a true national treasure. Her work will be cherished for many generations to come.
Dame Smith’s sons, Toby Stephens and Chris Larkin stated that Smith passed away in the early hours of Friday, in a London Hospital. Along with her two sons, her 5 grandchildren also were devastated to know the news of her death.
Even in her later days, she was in much demand, due to her excellent performance. Richard Eyre, who directed Smith, in a TV production stated that Smith was one of the smartest performers and also have to get very very early in the morning, to outwit her.
Smith’s fellow actors also paid a great tribute to her. One of the actors, Hugh Bonneville who played the role of Smith’s son in Downtown Abbey, stated that she was a sharp wit and had formidable talent.
Maggie Smith passed away in the early hours of Friday 27th September. The family members of Smith have thanked the staff of the Hospital for taking great care of Smith, in her last days.
Dame Kristin Scott-Thomas who was cast alongside Smith, in Gosford Park plus stated that though she took acting seriously, off-screen she had a great sense of humor.
A National Theatre spokesperson also stated that Maggie Smith spanned the film, television, and theatre world without equal.
Most of the actors who worked with her have shared their unforgettable moments with her.
She was seen performing last in 2023’s The Miracle Club, co-starring Kathy Bates and Laura Linney.
